Indian and Eskimo Affairs Program (Canada). Prince Edward Island Agency : The first federal officer to administer the affairs of the Indian population of Prince Edward Island was appointed in the year following that province's entry into the Canadian Confederation. Theophilus Stewart was appointed Visiting Superintendent by Order in Council 1594, 9 January 1874. A distinct Prince Edward Island Agency remained in operation until 1 July 1971, at which time responsibility for the First Nations of Prince Edward Island was transferred to the Maritime Regional Office, located in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Order in Council dated 9 January 1874; "Who was who and when to 1900."
