Photographs by and about the cinematic and acting career of Grant Munro, primarily as that was allied with the career of Norman McLaren at the National Film Board of Canada. Photographs relating to McLaren's life and work also form part of the fonds.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:McLaren, Norman, 1914-1987 : Norman McLaren (1914-1987), director of animated films (b. 11 April 1914 at Stirling, Scotland; d. at Montréal 26 January 1987). He followed John Grierson to the National Film Board in 1941 and remained there, except for 2 Unesco missions (to China in 1949 and to India in 1952). Constantly innovative, McLaren tried techniques such as drawing scratched directly on film, cutout animation, painting directly on film, etc. McLaren's creative genius made him Canada's leading director of animated films.
His life work of 72 films was donated in 1985 to the Museum of Modern Art, NY, and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Los Angeles.
