Sub-series consists of reports of steam and electric railways, 1875-1903. Under a 1875 act amending the Railway Act (38 Vict., c. 25), railway companies were required to submit reports annually to the Minister of Public Works. Organized alphabetically by company name, the reports were held and used by the Railway Committee of the Privy Council. From 1879 the reports were submitted to the Minister of Railways and Canals, from 1904, to the Board of Railway Commissioners, and from 1919, both to the Board of Railway Commissioners and the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The railway company had to supply in these reports information concerning the company's operations for the year, principal officers, capitalization, details of freight and passenger traffic, equipment, profit and loss, construction progress, accidents for the year, and description of the property and route. Similar reports were required from street railways. Some, but by no means all, of this information was used by the Minister of Railways and Canals in the Railway Statistics forming part of his annual report, which can be found in the printed Sessional Papers. There are gaps in the holdings for individual railways, as not all railways filed these reports each year.
