Series consists of the records of the federal government steamship subsidy service from the creation of the Department of Trade and Commerce in 1892 through the creation of the Canadian Maritime Commission in 1947 and the Canadian Transport Commission in 1967. The object of the subventions was to ensure the maintenance of efficient and economical mail, freight, passenger, and ferry steamship services for Canadian use. The series includes articles of agreement, numbered files, unnumbered files, Trade Routes and Steamship Subsidies Office records, and traffic returns.

Canadian Maritime Commission. Subsidies Branch : The Subsidies Branch advised the Canadian Maritime Commission on subventions, administered those subventions that had been granted, and inspected the services for which subventions had been granted or had been requested. The federal government steamship subsidy service has been in operation from the creation of the Department of Trade and Commerce in 1892 through the creation of the Canadian Maritime Commission in 1947 and the Canadian Transport Commission in 1967. The object of the subventions was to ensure the maintenance of efficient and economical mail, freight, passenger, and ferry steamship services for Canadian use.

Assistance to Canadian shipping services was carried out by the Subsidies Branch. This organization maintained its own records, the greater part of which were case files dealing with applications for subsidies and their computation and payment. The Department of Trade and Commerce had, from its inception in 1892, carried out the government's shipping service subsidy and subvention programme until this function was taken over by the Canadian Maritime Commission. Files from this Department were incorporated into the Commission's records. RG46 General Inventory
