Sous-fonds contains the records of Scotia Synfuels Limited - Scotia Coal Synfuels Project until 1987. The records are in seven series and 74 volumes. Scotia Coal Synfuels Project was a consortium of five energy companies and Alastair Gillespie and Associates Limited (AGAL) - the "developer" - formed in 1981 to build a coal liquefaction plant to extract oil from Nova Scotian coal. The Project anticipated that technology owned by Hydrocarbon Research Inc. (HRI) would allow them to do so profitably, and began by hiring consultants to evaluate and report on technical, financial, and social aspects of the idea. During nearly twenty years various technologies and plans were studied and evaluated, and financial and political support developed.

The records of Scotia Synfuels Limited (SSL) are here as a sous-fonds. The records are more than a series of the Gillespie papers, and less than a separate fonds. SSL is a separate entity, and its records were - in part - created, accumulated, used, and preserved to service that separateness. Compared to the business records, the SSL records are more structured, more through, more controlled. On the other hand, the SSL records are not so separate or so distinct that they can stand alone as a fonds separate from the other Gillespie papers. They are presented here as a sous-fonds of seven series. A few early files are in the Business: Consulting, Managing, and Directing Series.
