Series consists of autobiographical material, autograph albums, addresses, clippings, correspondence, exhibition material, miscellaneous documents, notebooks, reproductions of artwork, photographic albums documenting his early life and career, teaching notes, and photocopies of material from a scrapbook, relating to the life and work of H. Eric Bergman.

The autobiographical material includes 'Memories of a journey', a typed transcript of an account, originally written in German, as well as photographs, by Bergman of his voyage to Canada in 1913 and of a trip on Lake of the Woods and Indian River in the company of Harold Foster. The autograph albums date from Bergman's youth in Dresden and contain some illustrations. The addresses include one on woodcuts and wood engravings and one on the Society of Manitoba Artists.

The correspondence includes letters relating to exhibitions in Canada and to international exhibitions, including ones in San Francisco, South Africa and Warsaw, to the sale of Bergman's work, to his radio broadcast on wood engravings for the University of Manitoba, to the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and to his illustrations for McClelland and Stewart's publication of 'The Heart is highland' by James A. Roy. Among the correspondents are Robert Ayre 1947, James A. Roy 1947, and Harold Foster n.d.

The exhibition material includes invitations, notices and price lists. The notebooks date from 1925 to 1947 and include notes on art, itineraries and notes on trips, records of expenses, a log of his prints, and a record of time spent on illustrating 'The Heart is highland'.

The reproductions of artwork include some proofs of reproductions of wood engravings, evidently prepared for publication.

Included are two pocket sketchbooks of H. Eric Bergman's, with some notes in them as well as ca. 59 sketches, and a drawing, evidently a portrait of Bergman at work by an unidentified artist.

The series includes one sub-series, of posthumous material relating to H. Eric Bergman.
