Canada. Canadian Army. Canadian Railway Troops. Battalion, 1st : The 1st Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops was organised in April 1916 as the 1st Canadian Construction Battalion under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Blair Ripley. Its authorisation was published in General Order 69 of 15 July 1916. The battalion mobilised at Valcartier and recruited throughout Canada amongst 'skilled and experienced railway men' who would undertake general construction work.

The battalion embarked at Halifax on 13 September 1916 aboard Northland and arrived in England on 22 September 1916. Its strength was 23 officers and 846 other ranks. The battalion was then converted into a railway construction unit and arrived in France on 25 October 1916. The battalion was redesignated the 1st Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops on 5 February 1917. It demobilised at Toronto and was disbanded by general order 196 of 1 November 1920.
