Canada. Canadian Army. Canadian Railway Troops. Battalion, 7th : The 257th Battalion, predecessor of the 7th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops (CRT), was organized in December 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel L.T. Martin. Its authorization was published in General Order 11 of 1 February 1917. The battalion mobilized at Saint John and recruited in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick.

The 257th Battalion embarked at Halifax 17 February 1917 aboard MISSANABIE, disembarking in England on 26 February 1917. Its strength was 29 officers and 902 other ranks. It was redesignated as the 7th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops on 8 March 1917. Its authorization was published in General Order 63 of 15 June 1917. The 7th Battalion CRT arrived in France on 28 March 1917. The battalion demobilized in Ottawa and was disbanded by General Order 196 of 1 November 1920.
