Canadian Overseas Railway Construction Corps : The Canadian Overseas Railway Construction Corps was organised in the spring of 1915 as a result of a request by the British government for Canada to supply a railway construction unit for service in France. It was authorised by PC 482 of 5 March 1915. The corps was commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel C.W.P. Ramsay, a construction engineer on the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The Canadian Overseas Railway Construction Corps mobilised at Saint John and recruited from CPR personnel throughout Canada. The Corps embarked at Saint John on 14 June 1915 aboard Herschel, arriving in England on 25 June 1915. Its strength was 20 officers and 503 other ranks. It arrived in France on 25 August 1915 and was attached initially to the 2nd and 6th Divisions of the Belgian Army. The Canadian Overseas Railway Construction Corps returned to England on 5 October 1915 for transfer to Salonika but these orders were rescinded on the collapse of Serbia. The Canadian Overseas Railway Construction Corps returned to France on 2 November 1915 and was attached to the Royal Engineers, before being absorbed into the Canadian Railway Troops on 23 April 1918.
