Sub-series consists of correspondence that deals generally with the Quebec Observatory, 1854-1947. In addition, there is correspondence dealing with the noon gun and the time ball, 1912-1918; correspondence of the Ashe Family, later directors of the Observatory, 1840-1842, and a few pieces of undated correspondence concerning meteorological research carried out by E.D. Ashe.

Canada. Dept. of Transport. Air Service. Meteorological Division. Quebec Observatory : In the early 1850s E.D. Ashe, a Royal Navy officer, established the Quebec Observatory to provide meteorological forecasts for shipping in the Quebec harbour. W.A. Ashe succeeded his father as observer in 1886 and held the position until his death in 1893. He was replaced by Arthur Smith in 1894. Smith retired in 1929 and was in turn succeeded by Maurice Royer. An observatory was built on the Plains of Abraham in 1874. From this site weather observations and reports were issued and the exact time was announced by the noon gun and the time ball.
