Canada. Dept. of Communications. Space Program Sector : Though space-related research had been part of the Department of Communications since its inception in 1969, the Space Program Sector (ADMSP) was established in 1975 aligning with the department's increased role. Its responsibilities included the application of telecommunications satellites (such as Hermes and Anik B), supporting Canada's space industry through the transfer of technology, and providing a secretariat role for the Interdepartmental Committee on Space.

In 1980, the Ministry of State for Science and Technology (MOSST) was assigned responsibility for the development of space research, policy, and coordination of related programs across the federal government in 1980, though the Space Program Sector continued to have responsibility for telecommunications-related research and development. By 1983, the activities of the former Space Program Sector were now largely the responsibility of the Space Technology and Applications Branch of the Research Sector.
