Canada. Dept. of Communications. Information Technology Research and Development Branch : The Information Technology Research and Development Branch (DGTS) was established by 1980, continuing much of the work of the former Technological and Systems Research and Development Branch. Initially the branch was responsible for research and development of information technology systems (hardware and software) and the development of telecommunications and informatics services and applications to meet Canadian needs (most notably the Telidon system).

Research and development responsibilities of the former Communication Systems Branch became the responsibility of DGTS by 1983, including radio systems and communication networks. At the same time, DGTS activities related to applications development (including Telidon) were moved to the Applications Programs Branch under the Technology and Industry Sector.

The branch carried out work in four main areas: information technology R&D, communication networks and standards R&D, radio systems R&D, and behavioral research and evaluation.

In 1985, many of the branch's responsibilities were reorganized under various branches of the newly-created Telecommunications and Technology Sector.
