The fonds largely consists of documentation on Rolf Harder's design work for various clients but also includes some personal material.

The fonds includes working lay-outs for design projects such as Esprit magazine (Hoechst-Celanese), Teleglobe Canada, Consolidated Bathurst, Royal Bank, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Grand Prix du Canada, Bell Canada, Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., National Film Board, Maison Alcan, Agriculture Canada and many others.

It also includes some package samples from Hoffmann-La Roche, various samples of pharmaceutical advertising, stationary and letterhead designs, greeting cards, folders containing the finished product of the working lay-outs, posters and book covers.

Personal material in this fonds includes personal and general professional correspondence, society participation, awards and personal artwork.

At the fonds level there is also artwork for which the intended client is unknown or for experimental and abstract artwork.

Harder, Rolf, 1929-2013 : Rolf Harder was born in Germany in 1929 and immigrated to Canada in the late 1950s, after studying at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts (1948-1952). He began working in Montréal as a designer in his own design office, 1959-1965, and then co-founded a seven-man firm, Design Collaborative, in 1965 with Ernst Roch. In 1977 he dissolved that partnership and established Rolf Harder & Associates, Inc. During his career, he has designed symbols and trademarks, postage stamps, posters, advertisements and packaging for the pharmaceutical industry, and annual reports, books and other publications. Among his corporate clients over the years have been Consolidated Bathurst, Teleglobe Canada, Imasco, Bell Canada, Canada Post and Hoffmann - La Roche. He has also designed material for such organizations as the Canadian Association for Retarded Children.

He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Alliance Graphique Internationale, the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the International Centre for the Typographic Arts, and was a Fellow of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada. He won many awards for his designs, including prizes at the 4th Biennale of Graphic Design, Brno, Czechoslovakia, 1970, and at the International Peace Poster Competition, Moscow, 1987. His work was exhibited in a joint exhibition with Ernst Roch at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Montréal, 1970; and in solo exhibitions at the University Art Gallery and Museum, University of Alberta, 1978, University of Saskatchewan Art Department Gallery, 1979, and the Art Gallery of York University, 1979, and elsewhere. Samples of his graphic designs are held in many permanent collections, including the Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, and the National Archives of Canada.

Rolf Harder passed away in Montreal on August 23rd, 2013.
