Sub-series consists of records of the North American Boundary Commission that were incorporated into the filing system of the Dominion Astronomical Observatory. The sub-series includes field notes, astronomical observations, memoranda and miscellaneous records accumulated by Captain Cameron and his staff.

North American Boundary Commission (1872-1876) : In 1872, a joint British-American Commission commenced the survey of the international boundary between Canada and the United States from Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains. Captain DR Cameron was named as the British Commissioner in 1872 to work with a Commissioner appointed by the United States. Lieutenant Samuel Anderson was assigned to the expedition as chief astronomer with Lieutenant Albany Featherstonhaugh as his first ranking assistant and William F. King as sub-assistant astronomer. The commission has been referred to by a variety of names: the British North American Boundary Commission, the Northern Boundary Commission, the United States Northern Boundary Commission, American North-West Boundary Commission. Custodial history:

The records were presented to Canada by the Royal Observatory (Greenwich) and placed in the custody of the Chief Astronomer in 1898. The records were carried forward into the Dominion Astronomical Observatory after its creation. The stamp of the Observatory, dated 13 July 1907, can be found on all records of the western survey. While the records were held by the Observatory, they were organized by the alpha-numeric system (ie: 1E, 2E ...). In 1934, the documents were transferred to the then Public Archives of Canada.
