Sub-series consists of central registry files related to the shipbuilding function, including the interaction with private companies, which was administered within Marine Services. These files were assigned the 8900 block within the Transport Central registry and some of the records were brought forward from the old registries of the Department of Marine and Fisheries. Subjects include, but are not limited to, construction of Prince Edward Island Car Ferry, marine haul-outs, lightships, lifeboats, ice-breakers, tugs, freighter designs, and ship repairs and construction.

Sub-series also includes drawings and specification books for the construction, alteration and repair of departmental vessels. The classes of vessels include icebreakers, ferries, weather ships, supply, lightships, search and rescue, motor lifeboats and various small vessels. The more prominent vessels represented are: Abegweit, Alberni, Argenteuil, Bluenose, Brant, Chesterville, Cygnus, C.D. Howe, C.P. Edwards, d'Iberville, Ernest Lapointe, Estevan, Federal Maple, Federal Palm, Franklin, Grenville, John Guy, Lady Gray, Lady Laurier, Lord Selkirk, N.B. McLean, Pelee Islander, Petite Forte, Prima Vista, Safeguarder, Sambro, Saurel, and William Carson.

Original extent note:

RG12M 88918 originally consisted of: ships' drawings; instructions, specification books and inspection reports; photographs; 11 v. of service account ledgers; a package of upholstery samples; and 3 packages of ca. 400 x-ray plates. The x-ray plates were disposed of in Sept. 1994 because of being unreadable.
