Item is a drawing by Canadian artist John H. Macnaughton, executed presumably when the artist was believed to have been active (i.e. mainly 1880's & 1890's). The work, which was inspired by a passage from "Parkman's History", depicts a group of five Scottish soldiers from the Highland Guards gathered together, (some of whom are convalescing), in a Hospital room with a large window. They are seated or standing, some smoking pipes, around or close to a large wood burning stove, in conversation with one another - a soldier sitting on the window's ledge has his right arm in a sling, another soldier sitting in front of him has his head bandaged. To the immediate right of the stove are two seated nuns knitting long grey socks for the soldiers. Hanging on the walls, on either side of the large window, are various forms of military accoutrement worn/used by the men.

The title for this painting was provided by "Waddington's Auctioneers & Appraisers", in their catalogue description for the lot.

The National Archives of Canada owns a photograph of a watercolour of British Troops bringing wood from Ste. Foy, Quebec, acquuired in 1938 (acc. no. 1938-088).
