(Arthur George), Sir, 1860-1936 : Arthur Doughty succeeded Douglas Brymner as Dominion Archivist in 1902. Doughty had previously been a librarian for the Quebec Legislative Assembly. Doughty pursued a rigorous program of acquisition of archival records. He expanded the transcription program started by Brymner and actively acquired original documents. Doughty also expanded the range of media acquired by the Archives Branch, seeking out engravings, paintings, drawings and topographical surveys in addition to text, photographs and maps. During Doughty's tenure, the Public Archives Act of 1912 was passed, elevating the Archives to the status of a department. Doughty's position was promoted to the rank of Deputy Minister. The archives opened offices in Europe and in Canada as well as hired agents to procure acquisitions. Although the First World War curtailed many of Doughty's acquisition programs, the prosperity of the 1920s allowed for the continued expansion of archival holdings, which prospered until the financial strains of the Great Depression ended many of the initiatives. Doughty retired from the post in 1935 and was created K.C.M.G. the same year.
