Collection consists of microfilmed selected documents relating to Canada from the Rawlinson collection, located on microfilm reel A-1719.

There is an account, 1652 to ca. 1665, of the voyage of Pierre Esprit Radisson, 123 pages. Radisson wrote this account in London, discussing his capture by the Iroquois and his life among them until his escape, with a list of Indian tribes visitd. The document was prepared in French and English. (Bodleian reference: A329).

'Observations on the effects of cold at Hudson's Bay in 1741 and 1742', 1 page. Recorded at Fort Prince of Wales by Christopher Middleton, Captain and Commander of HMS Furnace. (Bodleian reference: A344/2).

Eighteenth century petition to George I from James Barkstead concerning his scheme to colonize the land lying between Nova Scotia and the State of Main (i.e., New Brunswick), approximately 20 pages. It would be called the province of Georgian. Settlements were to be placed between the Kennebec[asis] River to the St. Croix, lying to the southwest of the Bay of Fundy. With a specially prepared map: 'A new map of HM'S empire in North America, from Carolina to Newfoundland', engraved by S. Parker. Bound contemporary copy. (Bodleian reference: C281).

'Journal of operations at St. John's, Newfoundland, in fortifying the harbour ...', 27 June to 1 Oct. 1697, 32 pages. Prepared by T. Bell, the officer commanding. Discusses the fortifications erected, the numbers of men involved and their tasks. Bound. (Bodleian reference: C873).

Rawlinson, Richard, 1690-1755 : Antiquarian.

Richard Rawlinson was a topographer and nonjuring bishop and the fourth son of Sir Thomas Rawlinson. A staunch nonjuror and Jacobite, he was ordained deacon on 21 September and priest on 23 Sept. 1716 by Bishop Jeremy Collier. He then began to devote himself to antiquarian pursuits and in 1718-1719 travelled over the midland and southern parts of England. He also travelled to other countries of Europe and returned with many manuscripts, coins, medals, etc. In 1728 he was consecrated a Bishop.

While publishing little original matter, he edited many works of others. He bequeathed his manuscripts to the Bodleian Library. The Dictionary of National Biography, 1909.
