Fonds consists of microfilmed journals of a journey to Canada, 1847, and correspondence, 1850-1854. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1618. The journal, ca. 1847-1848, was kept in "America" in 2 volumes, 67 and 57 pages. De Vere went to Canada to farm. The journals provide commentary on his Canadian experiences. He describes various geographical features and explains how to skin and tan a hide. there are anecdotes about travel in the backwoods. The second volumes has a few tables of emigration statistics. (Reference number of original in Trinity College Library: 5061-2.)

There is a letterbook, 1847-1850, 195 pages, partly indexed on the microfilm reel. Writing from London, Canada West, de Vere corresponded with Lord Mountjoy, Lord Monteagle, Frederick Widder and, most frequently, with his mother, the Dowager Lady de Vere in Ireland. There are lengthy description of Indian life, land prices and speculation. De Vere, an active supporter of emigration, comments on British emigration policy. He went so far as to finance the crossing of "1,600 women to America". Nonetheless, he was conscious of the hardships involved in coming to Canada. Family and personal matters also arise in the correspondence. (Trinity reference: 5075a).

de Vere, Stephen Edward, Sir, 1812-1904 : Stephen de Vere was one of the younger sons of Sir Aubrey de Vere (1788-1846). The father, Aubrey de Vere, had taken the name of de Vere by letters patent and had married Mary, eldest daughter of Stephen Edward Rice of Mount Trenchard. They had five sons and three daughters. The elder de Vere led the life of a quiet country gentleman. Following the death of Sir Aubrey de Vere, Sir Stephen emigrated to Canada.
