Oil painting of University Club on Elgin St., Ottawa, by Robert Hyndman, owned by a former member. This is one of a series of views of Ottawa landmarks done by Hyndman in the 1950s and 1960s, many of which are still in private collections throughout the city.

Hyndman, Robert Stewart, 1915-2009 : Robert Stewart Hyndman was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1918, moved with his family to Ottawa in 1933, and trained as an artist at the Central Technical School in Toronto with Carl Schaefer and Charles Goldhamer. After graduating in 1937, he moved to London, England to continue his artistic studies at the Central School for Arts and Crafts. He returned to Canada in 1939, and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940, serving as a flight instructor at Uplands Airport in Ottawa from 1941-1943. In 1943 he transferred overseas, flying Spitfires as part of RCAF 411 Squadron, and completing 155 missions over France and the Netherlands during his tour of duty.

His drawings of his experiences in 1943-1944 were seen by government officials, and he was made an official Canadian war artist in September 1944. He went on to create 68 paintings, mostly portraits of Canadian senior military commanders, as well as most of Canada's fighter aces. He also captured his experiences as a pilot. The work he created is part of the Beaverbrook War Art collection at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Following the war, Hyndman returned to Ottawa and had a successful career as a muralist and portrait painter. He also became well-known as an art teacher, including a 37 year stint at the Ottawa School of Art (1971-2007). He was awarded an Art and Heritage Award from the City of Ottawa in 2000, and the Victor Tolgesy Award in 2003.
He continued to paint until his death in 2009, especially scenes of his beloved Gatineau countryside.
