Fonds consists of Last's publications including book chapters, refereed articles, letters to editors, editorials, book reviews and unpublished talks on all aspects of epidemiology and public health. Specific topics include health care in Australia, the training of doctors in Britain in the 1960s, the importance of public health programs, the teaching of medicine, the health implications of climate change and ethical concerns of epidemiologists. Last corresponded with other academic epidemiologists and public health officials in Canada, the USA, the UK and Australia covering all aspects of the profession. He corresponded extensively with leading American and British medical journals in the 1980s. The Teaching and Consulting Series contains correspondence and teaching notes for the University of Ottawa, 1970-1992 plus files on consulting work for various Canadian government agencies and reports for the World Health Organization (WHO) on Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Sri Lanka. The Dictionary and Encyclopaedia Series contains Last's contributions to 'A Companion to Medical Studies' and 'Oxford Illustrated Companion to Medicine'. There are extensive files for four editions of Last's 'Dictionary of Epidemiology' 1980-2000. Files on the production of the 13th and 14th edition of 'Maxcy-Rosenau-Last Public Health and Preventive Medicine' and on the 2nd edition of 'Public Health and Human Ecology'(1988). There is also material for major national and international conferences that Last was involved in.

Last, John M, 1926-2019 : John Murray Last was born in Tailem Bend, Australia on 22 Sept. 1926, the son of a doctor. He was educated in Sydney, Australia. In 1949 he graduated from University of Adelaide as a general practitioner. Dissatisfied after several years of general medical practice, he returned to the University of Sydney to obtain a diploma in public health. In 1961 he received a fellowship to study in England where he came into contact with new directions in epidemiology which was changing from concentrating on infectious diseases to a larger, more diverse field looking at factors effecting large populations such as environment, pollution, life styles, levels of health care etc. Last taught epidemiology at the Universities of Sydney, Vermont and Edinburgh.

In 1969 Last joined the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa where he taught public health and epidemiology. He was chairman of this department, 1970-1978. Last retired from full time teaching in 1992. He has been in contact with the leading epidemiologists of the world and wrote many articles on topics such as the general health of the population, medical education, global change, ethics and other subjects. Last was editor-in-chief of the 11th to the 14th editions of 'Maxcy-Rosenau-Last Public Health and Preventive Medicine' (1980-1997). He also edited the widely used textbook 'Public Health and Human Ecology' (1987, 1997). In 1982 Last began to work on his 'Dictionary of Epidemiology' which went through four editions, 1983-2000. Last was Associate Editor of the 'American Journal of Public Health', 1984-1993 as well as the Science Editor of the 'Canadian Journal of Public Health' 1981-1991 and editor of 'Annals' of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, 1990-1997. Last is a member of numerous public health and epidemiological associations and has held office in many of them. As a result of his varied work, Last has won many prestigious awards.
