The sequentially numbered file system was in use between 1901 and 1953 by the various forestry-related entities: Forestry Branch of Department of the Interior (1901-1936), the Dominion Forest Service of Department of Mines and Resources (1936-1949), and the Forestry Branch of the Department of Resources and Development (1949-1953). Some files also date from after 1953 when the Branch was part of the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources.
Records cover many aspects of the administration of federal forests lands under the Forestry Branch and Dominion Forestry Service. Included in the registry files are records relating to such topics as personnel, equipment and supplies, silvicultural research, management of forest reserves, conservation of forest resources, national and international forestry conferences, the development of the National Forestry Programme, and the operation of the Canada Forestry Act.
