Sub-series consists of correspondence, notes, and reports maintained by Herbert Marshall, Dominion Statistician of Canada.

More specifically, the sub-series consists of:

Herbert Marshall's speeches and articles, 1938 - 1956 (in RG31 vol. 1421);

Subject files on a very wide range of subjects, organized alphabetically from "Accident statistics" to "World Calendar" (in RG31 vol. 1422 - 1433). The date ranges of these subject files primarily fall within the 1938 - 1956 range, but a few files date as early as 1913;

Correspondence, minutes, and reports relating to the Department of Trade and Commerce's Departmental Commission on the Official Statistics of Canada ("Statistics Commission"), and that date from 1912-1915 (in RG31 vol. 1419-1420);

Material related to the British Commonwealth Statisticians Conference, 1920 - 1956 (in RG31 vol. 1421-1422);

A. Neal's material relating to the League of Nations, and which primarily pertains to the nomenclature and classification of commodities in trade statistics, national income, and financial statistics during the period 1935 - 1941 (in RG31 vol. 1420);

Herbert Marshall's manuscript "History of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics" sent to Walter Duffett in 1968, accompanied by background subject files dating back to 1903 (in RG31 vol. 1434-1435).

Sub-series also consists of six photographs, taken by the National Film Board, and including: three portraits of Herbert Marshall; a photograph of Representatives to the Dominion-Provincial Conference on Reconstruction, Ottawa, 6 Aug. 1945, seated at entrance to Centre Block, Parliament Buildings, Ottawa, Ont.; the Honorable C.D. Howe addressing the United Nations Conference on the Improvement of National Statistics, Ottawa, Ont., 1952; and participants in the Conference.

Marshall, Herbert, 1887-1977 : In 1921, Herbert Marshall started with the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in the Internal Trade Statistics Branch. Marshall rapidly became Chief of the Branch, and in 1939 he won the Gold Medal of the Professional Institute of the Civil Service of Canada for his pioneering work with the Canadian balance of payments during the interwar years. In 1942, he was named Assistant Dominion Statistician, and upon SA Cudmore's death in 1945, he became Dominion Statistician, a role he filled until 1956.
