Sub-series consists of central registry files relating to geographical associations. These records are part of the central registry system of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources although they predate the creation of that entity. Some of the earliest documentation consists of material generated by members of the Geographical Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. This became part of the files added to the new registry system of the Policy and Planning Branch of the new entity. The files generally predate 1972, that is shortly before the geographical/resource functions that had resided in this branch were transferred to various parts of the Department of the Environment, especially the Lands Directorate.

The files contain records of the National Advisory Committee on Geographical Research, the Canadian National Committee of the International Geographical Union and of the International Geographical Union itself. Members of the department served on the executive and assisted in program activities. These records along with general correspondence, minutes, conference material and research proposals are found among the files in this sub-series. The records are mostly filed as part of EMR's 5000 block, although some files are from the 6000, 7000 and 8000 block (volume 336) and others have no file designation (volume 337).
