Series consists of records created and/or maintained by companies that formed the Northern Railway Group. On 29 August 1849, The Toronto, Simcoe and Lake Huron Union Railroad Company (RG30-I-G-1-a) was incorporated (Statutes of Canada, 12 Vic., Cap. 196) to build a railway from Toronto to Lake Huron. The name was changed by statutes (13-14 Vic. Cap. 131) in August 1850 to Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Railroad Union Company (RG30-I-G-1-b). Some 95.21 miles of line were built and opened from Toronto to Collingwood between 1853 and 1855. The name was once again changed to The Northern Railway Company of Canada in August 1858 (22 Vic., Cap. 117).

In 1817 The North Grey Railway (no records at National Archives) and The Toronto, Simcoe and Muskoka Junction Railway (RG30-I-G-2) were leased by the Northern. In 1872 they amalgamated to form The Northern Extension Railway Company (RG30-I-G-3) which, in its turn, amalgamated with and took the name of the Northern Railway Company of Canada.

The North Simcoe Railway Company (RG30-I-G-4) line was leased in 1878.

Under an agreement of 6 June 1879, The Northern Railway Company of Canada and The Hamilton and North Western Railway (RG30-I-G-5) were consolidated as the Northern and North Western Railway (RG30-I-G-6). This was not a merger or amalgamation as both of the original Companies retained their corporate existence, though the Northern and North Western were operated by a Joint Executive Committee. The Northern and Pacific Junction Railway (RG30-I-G-7) was leased by the joint companies in 1884.

By 1888 the entire system totalled 497.17 miles of line. In that year, effective 24 February 1888, under Deed of Union of 24 January 1888, The Hamilton and Northwestern Railway Company, The Northern Railway Company of Canada and The Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada amalgamated as one company under the latter name.

Cartographic material (RG30M 77803/10) consists of plans dealing with the Northern Railway and the towns of Meaford, Southampton and New Lowell, Ont., dated 1857-1878.
