Series consists of records created and/or maintained by companies that formed the Midland Railway system. Under Province of Canada Act 10 Vic. Cap. 109 of 30 October 1846, The Peterborough and Port Hope Railway Company (no records at National Archives) was incorporated to build a line from Peterborough to Port Hope. The name was changed under Province of Canada Act 18, Vic Cap. 36 of 18 December 1854 to The Port Hope, Lindsay and Beaverton Railway Company (no records at National Archives) which constructed and opened for traffic 55.08 miles of railway in 1857 and 1858.

The name once again changed to The Midland Railway of Canada by Ontario Act 33 Vic. Cap. 31 on 24 December 1869. By 1879 this Company was operating over 137.82 miles of line between Port Hope and Midland. In 1876 the line of Toronto and Nipissing Railway Company (RG30-I-H-3) was leased. Under Ontario Act, 45 Vic. Cap. 67, 10 March 1882, effective 1 April 1882, The Midland Railway of Canada (RG30-I-H-1), The Grand Junction Railway Company (RG30-I-H-2), The Toronto and Nipissing Railway Company (RG30-I-H-3), The Toronto and Ottawa Railway Company (RG30-I-H-4), The Victoria Railway Company (RG30-I-H-5) and the Whitby, Port Perry and Lindsay Railway Company (45.59 miles - Whitby to Lindsay, no records at National Archives) were consolidated into one company under the name The Midland Railway of Canada. With the Lake Simcoe Junction Railway (RG30-I-H-6) which had been on lease to the Toronto and Nipissing, the Midland had 448.30 miles of railroad in operation. It also had an interest in The Midland Elevator and Forwarding Company Limited (RG30-I-H-7).

On 1 January 1884 the Midland Railway system, including Lake Simcoe Junction was leased to the Grand Trunk. Under Dominion Act 56 Vic. Cap. 47 of 1 April1893, the Midland Railway formally amalgamated with and took the name of The Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada. Following this acquisition of the Midland the Grand Trunk acquired, in 1888, The Peterborough and Chemong Lake Railway Company (RG30-I-H-8) which connected with Midland.
