Sub-series consists of records created and/or maintained by Canadian Northern land and real estate companies. Mackenzie and Mann and their Canadian Northern properties had grants for a large area of land in the prairie provinces. Sales of this land provided a dual benefit to the railway, not only providing money but encouraging settlement that would increase railway traffic and income. Much of the early land sales were undertaken by Davidson and McRae (RG30-III-K-1) who were general agents for the Canadian Northern and who promoted the Saskatchewan Valley and Manitoba Land Company (RG30-III-K-2) that was also active in selling Canadian Northern land. An early attempt to set up a Canadian Northern land company was Canadian Northern Townsite Company (RG30-III-K-3). Another Mackenzie and Mann land company was Canadian Land and Investment Limited (RG30-III-K-4). In order to consolidate their land holdings to provide backing for securities Mackenzie and Mann formed Canadian Northern Town Properties Company (RG30-III-K-5) in 1913. Canadian Northern Realties Limited (RG30-III-K-6) was incorporated in 1918 as a subsidiary of the newly nationalized Canadian Northern System. Continental Realty and Holding Company (RG30-III-K-7) and Duluth And Virginia Realty Company (RG30-III-K-8) were formed to carry out real estate transactions in the state of Minnesota. Prior to the consolidation of Canadian Northern Lands operations, certain land companies were incorporated, usually under the auspices of Davidson and McRae, to buy and sell this property. While not Canadian Northern owned companies, so closely were they associated with the system that their records became integrated with the system's. They include, in British Columbia, Fraser River Land Company, Limited (RG30-III-K-9), West Coast Land Company, Limited ( RG30-III-K-10) and Security Land Company Limited (RG30-III-K-11) and, in the prairies, Luseland Development Co. Ltd. (RG30-III-K-17) and Liverpool Canadian Lands, Ltd. (RG30-III-K-18).
