Series consists of the personal and professional textual and photographic records of Sir Sam Hughes. Included are: biographical notes, militia commissions, news clippings, and personal writings, these latter including an unpublished autobiography; correspondence from his early political life with such individuals as Sir John A. Macdonald, Sir Charles Tupper, Dalton McCarthy and others, as well as later speech notes presented in the House of Commons and elsewhere; official parliamentary returns, correspondence, telegrams, field notes and maps relating to Hughes' service during the South African War and his conflict with the General Officer Commanding the Canadian Militia, Major General E.T.H. Hutton; press clippings, correspondence, minutes and reports as Minister of Militia and Defence, including copies of the Ross Rifle and the Shell Committee reports; narratives and reports relating to the despatch and service of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War; and estate and financial records of Sir Sam Hughes.
