Fonds comprises original editorial illustrations and political cartoons created by Raffi Anderian. The majority of the works were published in the Toronto Star for which the artist has been working as graphic illustrator since 1989. The fonds is notable for the multiplicity of techniques used by the artist to create his work.

Anderian's art work has accompanied editorials and feature articles on a wide range of social, psychological and political issues. The more cogent illustrations underline the position of such marginalized groups as the elderly, those suffering from mental illness, the abused, the drug and alcohol dependent, and the poor and unemployed. Other examples from the fonds focus on pressing political issues such as repression and torture in third-world countries, A.I.D.S., famine, terrorism, and racism. Artwork to illustrate the pressing demands of the modern-day workplace, an ever-increasing dependence on technology, and pressures on working women and the traditional family structure are also of note.

In addition to the editorial illustrations, the fonds contains examples of the artist's political caricatures relating to federal, provincial and international personalities and issues. Included are caricatures of Lucien Bouchard, Kim Campbell, Jean Charest, Joe Clark, Bill Clinton, Jean Chrétien, Stockwell Day, Mike Harris, Ralph Klein, Preston Manning, Brian Mulroney, Jacques Parizeau, and Lester B. Pearson. Subjects to note are federal-provincial relations, health care cuts, environmental issues such as over-fishing and global warming, and N.A.F.T.A.

Anderian, Raffi, 1963- : Raffi Anderian is an award-winning graphic illustrator who, in addition to working freelance, has been on the staff of the Toronto Star since 1989. Anderian was the youngest recipient of the National Newspaper Award for Cartooning which he received in 1988. Other honours include the Award of Excellence from the Society of Newspaper Design, the award for colour illustration from the International Association of Business Communications and first place for his work from the Art Directors Club in New York. His illustrations have appeared on the covers of magazines across the country, in the Los Angeles Times, and the Chicago Tribune. Commercial campaigns to which he has contributed include Letraset, the Stratford Festival, Montreal Trust, and Jamieson Vitamins. See artist's web site and artist file.
