Sub-series consists of drafts of secret and confidential despatches to the Colonial Office, some of which are cipher messages. These despatches, covering the years 1867 through 1913, are arranged chronologically, in volumes 3 to 16 and deal with a variety of issues including the defence of Canada, Confederation, the Louis Riel uprisings, the Treaty of Washington, the Boer War, the Naval Bill controversy and the Alaska Boundary dispute.

The sub-series also includes miscellaneous correspondence received by the Governor General, covering the years 1856 to 1867. They are bound and arranged chronologically, in volumes 1 to 3, with an index for the first two volumes. Volumes 1 and 2 and a portion of volume 3 contain correspondence of the British Consulates in Chicago, New York, Washington and the Lieutenant Governors of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, with the Governor General. Correspondence for the year 1863 appears to be missing. The subjects covered include, among other topics, the Fenian Movement and Confederation.
