Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Food and Drug Directorate. The Food and Drug Directorate was established in 1946, and consisted of the Food and Drug Division, the Labels and Advertising Division, the Proprietary or Patent Medicine Division and the Central Laboratories. In 1962, the Narcotic Control Division joined the Directorate. Upon formation of the Health Protection Branch in January 1972, the Food and Drug Directorate was split into two separate entities: the Food Directorate and the Drugs Directorate.

The series includes records of the Food and Drug Division and the Montreal Regional Office, including but not limited to registry files and minutes of the annual departmental conferences of senior officials. Also included in the series are five electronic data files related to a national survey of nutritional status that was carried out between 1970-1972.

Researchers should note that records from the Food and Drug Directorate may be included in the series for that Directorate's successors (e.g., Drugs Directorate).
