Series consists of registry files relating to family allowances, youth allowances, and old age security, filed in registry block 200. The files in volume 1283 contain annual reports of the Family Allowances and Old Age Security Division of the Department of National Health and Welfare for the period 1945 to 1956. The time span is significant because it includes the formative stages of the two major pieces of legislation; the Family Allowance Act 1944 (amended in 1956) and the Old Age Security Act of 1951. These two responsibilities were assigned to the Welfare Branch for administration. The files contain the published report included in the department's Annual Report as well as "working material" submitted by the regional offices. These detailed reports provide insight into activities at the provincial and local levels. Statistical data and some correspondence are also included in these files.
