Series consists of the records of the Fisheries and Marine Service of Environment Canada. Environment Canada. Fisheries and Marine Service : The Fisheries and Marine Service (FMS) was an element of Environment Canada that operated in the seventies prior to the creation of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. It was established January 1, 1973 as a combination of two existing Environment Canada entities: the Fisheries Service (formerly part of the Department of Fisheries and Forestry), and the Marine Sciences Branch (formerly part of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources). It was headed by Senior Assistant Deputy Minister Ken C. Lucas for most of it's existence.
Responsibilities of the Fisheries and Marine Service included fisheries management and research, oceanographic research and hydrographic charting, in addition to developing and maintaining port facilities for commercial fishing vessels and recreational boating.
