The item is a portolan chart by Nicholas Comberford of the Atlantic Ocean showing both the eastern and western shores, including Western Europe, West Africa, Brazil, and part of Newfoundland. Microfilmed in 1985.

Comberford, Nicholas, ca. 1600-1673 : Nicholas Comberford was born about 1600 and died in 1673. He was an English chart or plattmaker of the "Thames School" who was first apprenticed to the London Drapers Company school of portolan chart makers. Until 1628 he worked for his former master John Daniel at Irongate. Comberford was known for his manuscript portolan charts of North Atlantic shores and the Mediterranean Sea. His son Thomas Comberford was also a chart maker.
