Sub-series consists of correspondence with the High Commissioner in Britain. The Secretary of State acted as the channel of communication between the Canadian Government and the High Commissioner and for the years 1880-1885 maintained a separate system into which this correspondence was registered. After 1885 these letters were filed with the general correspondence (see RG6-A-1, MIKAN 196942, R174-26-2-E). The office of the High Commissioner was established in 1880 (43 Vic., c. 11). As the representative and agent of Canada in Great Britain, the High Commissioner worked closely with the Ministers of Agriculture and Finance overseeing commercial, financial and general interests of Canada (P.C. 935-1880). He also had jurisdiction over emigration.

The sub-series includes indexes and registers (Vol. 237). Two indexes for the years 1880-1883 exist. One is arranged by subject and the second by correspondent. The registers deal with the years 1880-1884 and provide a synopsis of the subject discussed and a brief description of the action taken. An incomplete register compiled for 1880-1893 also contains a synopsis of the correspondence subject but since it is a selective listing, it can be best used to get an overall view of the Secretary of State's responsibilities as an intermediary.

The files in volumes 238-244 contain correspondence involving the High Commissioner and various government departments and deal with a wide range of subjects including personnel matters, emigration, trade and customs regulations.

The registers and indexes (Vol. 237, reel T-4161) act as a finding aid for this material. In addition, a shelf list is available.

Volumes 245-246 contain letter books for the years 1880-1885 and include their own indexes. Usually related to material found in the registers and correspondence, these may be used to fill in where the correspondence files are lacking.
