Series consists of records from various advisory committees and subcommittees of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) and its successor, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

Series consists, in large part, of records dating from 1971 to 2001, from the following advisory bodies: the Advisory Committee on Nuclear Safety (ACNS); Group Medical Advisors; Joint Subcommittee on Regulatory Research; and the Advisory Committee on Radiological Protection (ACRP) as well as its Sub-Committee on Risk Estimates. Included among those records are sound recordings of the proceedings of two meetings. Series also consists of Joint ACNS/ACRP Working Group documents.

Series also consists of related administrative records on electronic supports (e.g., diskettes, CDs, zip disks), ranging in date from at least 1985 to 2002.

Series also consists of a minute book for the meetings of the Advisory Mining Committee on Radio-Active Minerals that were held on 23 January 1948 and 18 January 1951.

Canada. Atomic Energy Control Board. Advisory Committee Secretariat : Almost since its beginning, the AECB sponsored independent advisory committees. These committees were composed of experts from federal and provincial governments, the academic community and private industry. These committees provided advice on matters related to regulatory activities, including specific licence applications. Between 1956 and 1978, thirteen such committees were established and disbanded, as required. With the growth of internal scientific and technical expertise, however, the need for advice from these committees decreased, and they were disbanded in the late 1970s.

Nevertheless, a need for independent advice still existed within the AECB, so the Advisory Committee on Radiological Protection (ACRP) and the Advisory Committee on Nuclear Safety (ACNS) were established in 1979 and 1980 respectively. A third advisory group, the Group of Medial Advisors (GMA), was also established to give independent generic advice to the Board on matters relating to any medical aspect of ionizing radiation. Committee membership was drawn from academic and research institution-based science and engineering; the health sciences professions; non-governmental public health protection agencies; private health consulting firms and social scientists. Advice was conveyed in the form of reports to the Board, through the President.

Advisory committees could offer, on their own initiative, advice to the Board related to matters consistent with their objective. The committees could also establish ad hoc working groups and sub-committees as required, which were composed of members of the committee and would report on specific issues of importance. Once the work of the sub-committee was completed, they were disbanded.

The committees worked with their own secretariat - the Advisory Committee Secretariat - and their own record-keeping system and personnel. The committees were solely responsible for the contents of their reports and the AECB was under no obligation to take the advice rendered.

With the creation of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, it was decided that the formal committee structure was no longer required and these Advisory Committees were disbanded.
