De Laky, Barnabas R., 1915-1983 : Upon completing his doctorate in political science in 1938, Barnabas Raymond Laszlo de Laky (1915-1983) was awarded a post-graduate scholarship at the London School of Economics. After his return from England, he accepted a position as Research Officer with the National Bank of Hungary. From 1941 (the same year that he obtained his doctorate in law), he was employed by the Hungarian Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Communications. In 1943, he was sent to Switzerland as a member of a permanent trade delegation. He remained in that position until 1944, when he resigned in protest against the German replacement of the Horthy regime.
Upon his resignation from his government position, he supported himself representing different commercial and trade businesses in Switzerland. Emigrating to Canada in 1951, he started out as a life insurance salesman in Ottawa. In 1956, he won a position with the federal government. He worked for different government departments, including the Department of Citizenship and Immigration, Labour and for National Health and Welfare. In 1968, he became involved in the administration of the Canada Pension Plan. As part of this undertaking, he had special responsibility for amending the Old Age Security Act. At the same time, he represented the federal government at national and international conferences.
