Starting in July 1974, the earliest sound recordings in this series were recorded by Library and Archives Canada via a direct telephone line to the National Press Theatre in the National Press Building in Ottawa. This enabled Library and Archives Canada to record news conferences held during normal working hours when a technician was monitoring the line. However, some news conferences were missed due to this process. As of 1 July 1975, the archives set up an automatic voice-operated relay to record all news conferences held at the National Press Theatre. The method of acquisition later switched to acquisition on blank recording media suppiled by LAC.
