Item is a circular shaped 18 carat gold medal (struck in high relief) issued by the Industrial Exhibition Association of Toronto (the Canadian National Exhibition after 1904) and awarded 6 September 1882 to John Gillies (1811-1888) of Gillies Son & Co., Carleton Place, Ontario, "for (submitting) the best and most stylish tweeds of any wool, any weight and Scotch finish". The obverse of the medal shows the conjoined effigies/busts of the Marquis of Lorne, the Governor-General, and his wife, the Princess Louise facing the viewers left and contained within a wreath of maple leaves. The reverse of the medal shows the arms and legend for the City of Toronto contained by four allegorical medallions, each of which separates a part of the Exhibition Association's official name/title and which depict agriculture, industry, horticulture and the arts.
