Biography/Administrative history:

Spremo, Boris, 1935-2017 : Boris Spremo, C.M., M.P.A., photographer, was born in Yugoslavia and emigrated to Canada in 1957. He was educated as a cinematographer at the Cinematographic Institute, Belgrade. After a variety of jobs, he was hired by the Globe and Mail in Toronto in 1962. In 1966, he moved to the Toronto Star, where he stayed until his retirement in 2000. He was the first Canadian to win a First Prize Gold Medal in the World Press Photo competition in the Hague, in 1966. Also in 1966, he was Canadian Photographer of the Year. He has received almost 300 major national and international awards. His photography covers the gamut from war reporting (Vietman, the Middle East, Iraq and elsewhere), to politics, sports and personalities. His focus, however,
has been storytelling: "To wrap up a story, we need emotion. That sells papers. Something that grabs you is of new value." To honour his photojournalism, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1997.
