The fonds of the Major-General D. R. Cameron and Sir Charles Tupper families provides an intimate view of Canadian political and military activities from the time of Confederation through the First World War.

Textual material of the Cameron / Tupper family fonds consists of: official, private and family correspondence, ca. 1869-1915, of Sir Charles Tupper; official, private and family correspondence, ca. 1860-1920, of D.R. Camerion documenting his military service in India and in Canada while employed on the North West Boundary Commission and as Commandant of the Royal Military College; and family correspondence of the various members of the Cameron Family, 1880s-1920.

The collection is comprised of a collection of artwork relating to family activities, professional activity (specifically sketches taken during the Boundary Commission work of Donald Roderick Cameron), in a variety of formats. There is a large collection of postcards, documenting travels primarily in Europe, of various family members (most addressed to Lillie T. Cameron). The original artworks were largely executed by Donald Roderick Cameron, although some are by other family members and other noted artists for example the painted photographs of William Notman, painted by G.S. Hayward and A. Walker. The artworks span a period from about ca. 1845 to ca. 1918.

Photographic portion of the Cameron/Tupper families fonds consists of 301 b/w photographs taken between 1861 and 1943. Portraits include Sir Charles and Lady Tupper, Major-General Donald Roderick Cameron, Emma Cameron (née Tupper), Nancie Cameron including portraits as a nurse during World War I, William Tupper "Jock" Cameron, Ada Campbell and Frances Cameron. Also included are two albums of the Tupper's family's visit to Italy, 1905; one album of the Boer War 1899-1901 in South Africa; a series of photographs on Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario, ca. 1885-1890 showing buildings, cadets, officers, dining hall, summer and winter uniforms; one photograph of the funeral of Sir John A. Macdonald, Royal Military College cadets forming guard of honor and firing party followed by "A" Battery, RCA, Kingston, Ontario, 1891; four historical photographs of birch bark canoe building and Indian graves at Lake of the Woods, ca. 1874 taken during the International Boundary Commission; as well as two cdv's of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, 1865. Photographers include such well known names as Henry Henderson, Sheldon & Davis, Kingston; William James Topley, The Notman Studio, Lancefields Studio, E. Spencer, Ottawa, On., William Notman, Taber, The Grip Co., Ellisson & Co., Quebec, Gauvin Gentzel, Steele, Winnipeg, Man., Parish & Co., A.W. Brewster, Halifax, N.S. as well as some photographers from England.

Cameron, Donald Roderick, 1834-1921 : Donald Roderick Cameron was born in 25 April 1834, the son of Hugh Innes Cameron, a banker and prominent official in Rosshire, Scotland. He entered the Royal Artillery in 1856, and went to India, where he took part in the Bhootan Expedition, 1863-1865, serving as Adjutant and as a Staff officer with the Royal Artillery's Dooar Field Force. For this, he was awarded the India General Service Medal with Bhootan clasp and was three times Mentioned in Despaches. He was promoted Captain in 1866. In July 1869, he maried Emma, daughter of Sir Charles Tupper, with whom he later had three daughters (Sophie Tupper Cameron, 1870; Lille Tupper Cameron, 1873; and Frances Melita Tupper Cameron, 1878), and one son (William Tupper Cameron, 1880). Later that year, he accompanied William McDougall to the Red River as a Member of the Executive Council. In 1871, he was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal for swimming through floating ice to save a man from an overtuned boat in the Ottawa River. From 1872 to 1876, he superintended the International Boundary Commission which marked the boundary from the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains. For this work, he was named a Companion of the Order of St.Michael and St.George (C.M.G.) in 1877. He was promoted Major in 1875, to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1882, to Colonel in 1886, and retired in 1887 with the rank of Major-General. In 1883, he was a member of the Canadian delegation to the International Conference at Paris for the protection of submarine cables, and in 1887-1888 he served as Official Secretary for the Canadian Commissionner (Sir Charles Tupper) at the Washington Fisheries Conference. From 1888 to 1896, he served as the Commandant at The Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario. In 1901, he returned to Scotland, setting in Dingwall in 1903, and died there in December 1921.

Tupper, Charles, Sir, 1821-1915 : Prime Minister of Canada (1896).

Charles Tupper was born at Amherst, Nova Scotia on 2 July 1821. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and was the founding president of the Canadian Medical Association.

Tupper was elected as a Conservative to the Nova Scotia legislature in 1855 for the riding of Cumberland County. He served as provincial secretary under Premier James W. Johnston, who he succeeded in 1864.

Tupper was elected to parliament for the riding of Cumberland in 1867. Under Sir John A. Macdonald, Tupper served as president of the Privy Council (1870-72), minister of inland revenue (1872-73), customs (1873-74), public works (1878-79), and railways and canals (1879-84), in which role he championed the transcontinental railway. Tupper travelled to Red River in 1869 after his son-in-law was detained by the Métis provisional government under Louis Riel.

Tupper went to London as Canada's high commissioner in 1883. He initially retained his cabinet post and was actively involved in Canadian politics throughout his time as high commissioner, including serving as minister of finance (1887-88).

Tupper returned to Ottawa in January 1896 to become secretary of state in Sir Mackenzie Bowell's disintegrating government. He represented the riding of Cape Breton. Tupper succeeded Bowell on 1 May 1896. Despite losing the general election in July, Tupper led the Conservatives until 1900. His 69-day term as prime minister is the shortest in Canadian history.

Tupper endorsed the federal government's systematically racist relationship with Indigenous Peoples, which caused tremendous ongoing trauma, displacement, disenfranchisement and exclusion

Tupper married Frances Morse in 1846. He was knighted in 1879, and created a baronet in 1888. He retired to England and died there on 30 October 1915. He is buried at St John's Cemetery, Halifax.
