The fonds comprises documents accumulated by several generations of the Wainwright family, principally material relating to John Wainwright I, II and III but including a number of items concerned with the Hayes, Rycraft, Carter and related families. The largest portion consists of commissions in the Royal Navy and correspondence exchange by John II and John III with colleagues, family and friends. The "Remembrance Book" album compiled by Elizabeth Powell Wainwright brings together poetry, songs and hymns as well as sketches, watercolors and other graphic items, 1829-1840.

The correspondence of John Wainwright II offers commentary on people and places he observed during his service in East Indian waters, as well as on naval matters and broader defence issues. The correspondence of John Wainwright III includes letters commenting on slavery and other issues in the West Indies, as well as two exceptionally long diary-style letters of 1826 commenting on life aboard HMS Blossom, and the native peoples and islands encountered, during his voyage along the Pacific coasts of South and North America, plus and two dozen letters written while aboard the Black Prince during the laying of the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable, 1863-1864. The assorted diary and almanach volumes, and varied printed works, illustrate the types of pocket guides carried for convenient reference, and items treasured as souvenirs.

Wainwright, John, 1800-1867 : John Wainwright I, the son of Jonathan Wainwright of Yorkshire, England, began his naval career in 1751, serving as a midshipman and Master's Mate during the next decade and qualifying as a Lieutenant in 1760. He saw active service primarily during periods of war. Retired in 1804, he died in 1810.

John Wainwright II, born 25 Feb. 1772, the son of John Wainwrighte I and Mary Hayes. He also served in the Royal Navy, attaining the rank of Commander by 1798 and Captain by 1806. During his service in the East Indies, collaborating with Lieutenant Colonel Smith of the 65th Regiment, he destroyed pirate strongholds in the Persian Gulf. He married Harriet Stanfell and had 3 sons and 3 daughters. He died in 1821 and was buried at Wickham in Hampshire.

John Wainwright III, born in 1800, likewise served in the Royal Navy, serving for several years in the West Indies before being appointed Lieutenant on HMS Blossom in 1825. He spent 1825-1826 on HMS Blossom under Captain Beechey, sailing in the Pacific with the goal of meeting Sir John Franklin in the Bering Sea. In 1830 he married Elizabeth Powell and in 1836 they emigrated to Lower Canada, settling at Silver Heights, St. Andrews, Argenteuil County. He was named to the Special Council of Lower Canada, 19 September 1839. He made a number of trips to England, and spent much of 1863-1864 on the Black Prince during the laying of the transatlantic cable. He died in December 1867. His son John W. Wainwright married Amelia E. C. Carter

General note:

The fonds was donated in 1991 by Mrs. Russell Hoffman (née Muriel Wainwright), a great-graddaughter of John Wainwright III (1800-1867), who brought the family to Canada. A copy of the atlas "Thirty Two New and Accurate Maps of the Geography of the Ancients..." by Herman Moll (second edition, London, 1726) has been catalogued separately. Mrs Hoffman presented to the Mills Memorial Library at McMaster University, a manuscript copy of the 1825 Carmichael Smyth report found with the Wainwright family papers, as LAC already holds copies of that document .

Physical description note:

The album contains 9 printed items (mostly engravings); 5 watercolors; 19 sketches in graphite and/or ink; 1 photo; 4 lace patterns (ink on paper), 7 items composed of leaves, ferns, paper and what looks like cloth - total 45.

Note on the state of conservation:

Many of the parchment documents are over-size and will require special handling if reproduction is requested. The album contains many loose items, and likewise requires special handling.

Arrangement note:

The organization of the documents in 18 files reflects the structure and order in which the material came from the family: grouped roughly by type of document and by the primary creator or collector of the items.
