Blois, François-B. de, 1829-1913 : François B.-de Blois (1829-1913) was a Quebec artist who painted still lifes, trompe-l'oeil works and landscapes. He worked in Montreal ca. 1863, and then primarily in Boston afterwards. From 1867 to 1873 he participated in exhibitions at "l'Athenaeum" and was a member of the Arts Club. He studied in Paris as a student of C. Daubigny in 1870, and was represented at the Salon des artistes français. In 1872 he went to Naples and studied with Vincenzo Marinelli. After 1874 he was a member of the Brooklyn Art Association (New York); he exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1879-1880; he also exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York. In an 1894 review of Boston artists 'de Blois' was described as 'painting his landscapes in the manner prevalent fifty years earlier, with the characteristic mountains in the background.' The only Canadian work known with certainty to be by François-B. de Blois, is a landscape of the Outaouais entitled: "La Ferme à Vaudreuil," 1875, at the Mountreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Source of title:

The title is derived from an inscription on the recto of the painting in the hand of the artist.

Note on the state of conservation:

The condition of the painting is fair/poor with surface dirt, cracked paint surface, paint flaking and losses (left side, lower left mostly, lower left corner and bottom, top centre in sky, centre right in trees). There is some buckling of the canvas top left corner and left side.

Custodial history:

Painting acquired at auction at Waddingtons, Auctioneers & Appraisers, 111 Bathurst Street, Toronto, Ontario, Lot 1339, on June 6, 2002. Description from Waddinton's auction catalogue: "The painting: 'Souvenir Caconowosg (Cacouna, Quebec),' has been ascribed to the 19th century Quebec School by the auction house. The title and date are derived from inscriptions on the work. The artist is possibly Blois ?, possibly the Quebec artist François-B. de Blois ? (1829-1913). The scene depicts boating on the lower St. Lawrence, a popular summer locale in the 1870's and the subject of engravings published in the 'Canadian Illustrated News' in the early 1870's."
