The fonds contains records pertaining chiefly to the musical career of Marcus Adeney. The records also show the artist's interest for literature, philosophy, and musical and literary criticism. The fonds contains, among other items: personal diaries; a birth certificate; correspondence with personalities in the Canadian and American music communities (Gordon Epperson) and with students; writings, including poems, novels, essays, articles and concert programme notes including 20 years of notes for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra; manuscripts of compositions and musical arrangements; press clippings; articles, a diary and drawings by Jeanne Adeney; two drawings by Arthur Lismer; photographs of Marcus Adeney, members of his family, personalities in the music world, travels and trains; sound recordings by Marcus Adeney and various cellists, as well as an interview with Christopher Adeney regarding his father's novel New Babylon.

Adeney, Marcus, 1900-1998 : Born in England, Marcus Adeney became a naturalized Canadian in 1904. He was a cellist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1928 to 1944, and a member of the Solway String Quartet from 1948 to 1958 and of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Symphony Orchestra from 1952 to 1963. In the 1950s he performed in Toronto with the Marcus Adeney Quartet (Hyman Goodman, Berul Sugarman and Eugene Hudson). He has taught at the Hambourg Conservatory (1928-51), the Royal Conservatory of Music (1944-85) and the University of Toronto (1953-63). In addition to writing music or literary criticism for magazines and newspapers, he is also a composer, novelist and poet. His writing has been published in the United States, England and Canada.
