With the exception of 30 loose prints, all prints are found in 11 albums. Most of the images were evidently taken by George Puddicombe, although several are obviously from other sources; those for which negatives are found in the negatives sub-series can safely be attributed to Puddicombe. The photographs document activities and personalities of the War Crimes Investigations Unit, from late autumn 1946 until spring 1947, as well as Hong Kong and vicinity including residents, buildings, geography and activities. Each album generally concentrates on one particular aspect of Puddicombe's activities, or of Hong Kong; several have been given titles by Puddicombe. Each is more specifically described in a separate file.

The photographs are often captioned in the albums, sometimes extensively. They are also usually identified with the negative number of the appropriate negative. As the negatives are virtually all individually identified (although only briefly), it may be necessary to use the identifications accompanying the negatives in order to identify the prints.
