The sous-fonds contains records that document Charles Ashton Hesson's professional, personal, financial, legal and social activities. The records are arranged in five series: Correspondence, (Vols. 14; 17); Financial Papers, (Vol. 14); Legal and Business Papers, (Vol. 14); Personal Papers, (Vol. 14); Research Notes, (Vols. 15; 17). Photographs include Charles Hesson, Lionel Hesson and Samuel Rollin-Hesson, various family members and the Hesson home in St. Catherines, Ontario. There is also a photograph of the bust of Sir John McDonald.

Hesson, Charles Ashton, 1860-1936 : Charles Ashton Hesson, the son of Samuel Rollin Hesson and Margaret Jane Hesson née Polley, was born on March 28, 1860, in Stratford, Ontario, where he received his formal education. In 1882, he was employed as a land agent in Brandon, Manitoba, where his elder brother Frederick Henry Hesson had moved. By 1885 he had become a civil servant in the employ of the Inland Revenue Department, first in Brantford, Ontario, then in St. Catharines, Ontario, where he eventually settled. He married Agnes Ada Lizars, daughter of Dr. John Lizars Lizars and Agnes Anne Lizars née Valentine, on February 11, 1887 in St. Catherines, Ontario.

In addition to his work as a civil servant, Charles Ashton Hesson was actively involved in the development of the Welland Power and Supply Canal Company Limited (subsequently known as the Niagara-Welland Power Company), whose charter was owned by his brother-in-law, Harry Symons. Hesson was also a contributing member of the Lincoln Historical Society, the Ontario Historical Society and the Ontario Horticultural Association.

He died on October 16, 1936 in St. Catherines, Ontario.
