The album, probably compiled by Mary Clark, the wife of George Dundas, the Lieutenant-Governor of Prince Edward Island, contains various cartes-des-visites photographs of the prominent men and women of the Halifax society including Sir Charles Hastings Doyle who was the Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia (1867-1873), Rt. Rev. Hibbert Binney, the bishop of Nova Scotia (1851-1887), Admiral Rodney Mundy and other members of the Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island military and civil establishment.

Additionally, the album contains photographs of prominent members of the British establishment including Sir James Archibald Hope and his son, Sir John Adrian Louis Hope, 7th Earl of Hopetoun, later first Marquess of Linlithgow, who became the first Governor-General of Australia.

There is also a portrait of Sir Henry Dundas, 3rd Viscount Melvillle, (1801-1876), a British military leader, who played a distinguished part in the second Sikh War. He was the grandson of Sir Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, and was a relation of George Dundas'. The album also contains photographs of Countess of Lanesborough and her young son, Lord Newton Butler.

Included are photographs that depict Halifax Citadel, Wellington Barracks and other views of Halifax, Nova Scotia circa 1863.

Dundas, George, 1819-1880 : Following completion of his education, George Dundas entered the British army in 1839. He served for five years and during that time was posted to Bermuda and Nova Scotia. After resigning his commission, he was elected as a Tory to the British House of Commons where he sat for Linlithgow from 1847 to 1858.

On 8th June 1859 he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Prince Edward Island. In 1875 he was appointed governor of the Island of St. Vincent and the Antilles. In 1879 he was created a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) and he died at St. Vincent and the Antilles on 18th March 1880.
