Peebles, Joan, 1899-1991 : Contralto and music teacher Joan Peebles was born Angusta Brownie Peebles in 1899 in New Westminster, British Columbia. She trained as an opera singer at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York from 1924 to 1927, after which she moved to New York City to pursue a performance career.

Between 1928 and 1942, Peebles performed leading roles with numerous opera companies and festivals throughout the Eastern United States including the American Opera Company, the Worcester Festival, the Rochester Civic Music Association, the New Jersey Opera Association, the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Civic Opera Company. She was also a founding member of the Chautauqua Opera Association in 1929 and remained a principal contralto with the company until 1942.

In addition, Peebles was an in-demand oratorio soloist throughout the 1930s, performing Bach's Mass in B Minor and Handel's Messiah annually with numerous organizations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York. Her many appearances included concerts at Carnegie Hall.

A descendent of Scottish immigrants, Peebles was also well versed in Scottish folk music. She performed at the Highland Gathering and Scottish Music Festival at the Banff Springs Hotel in both 1929 and 1930, and frequently included Scottish repertoire in her recital programs.

Though much of her career was centred in the United States, Peebles gave numerous performances in Canada, most notably as a soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Of the many roles that Peebles' interpreted over the course of her career, she garnered particular attention for her portrayal of Carmen, and subsequently recorded excerpts from this opera with members of the Metropolitan Opera Company in 1940.

In 1942, Peebles moved to Titusville, Pennsylvania, where she ran a private teaching studio until her retirement in 1973.
