International Choral Festival (1989 : Toronto, Ontario) : This choral singing festival was conceived by Nicholas Goldschmidt and took place in Toronto in June 1989. The theme was "The Joy of Singing. " Over 70 concerts were presented, featuring choral ensembles from a range of countries including France, Germany, Bulgaria, Finland and the United States and 31 Canadian choral ensembles. Works were also commissioned for the occasion from Canadian composers including Jacques Hétu (Les Illusions fanées) and R. Murray Schafer (The Death of a Buddha). This eclectic festival was open to various types of music including baroque, gospel, Gregorian chant, avant-garde, Tibetan chant and folk.
