Steinhouse, Tobie, 1925- : Tobie Steinhouse was born in Montreal in 1925, the daughter of Romanian Jewish parents. She attended Baron Byng High School, where she was influenced by the celebrated art teacher Anne Savage, and then studied engineering drawing at Sir George Williams University. During the Second World War, she worked as an aeronautical draftsman. After the war, she went to New York to study at the Art Students League, 1946-1947, and while there married the Canadian journalist and author Herbert Steinhouse, who was then studying social research in New York after working for the UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.

After their marriage, the Steinhouses moved to Paris, where they remained for ten years. Tobie Steinhouse furthered her studies at l'École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, 1948, and Académie de la Grande Chaumière, 1949-1950, and developed her printmaking skills with the renowned printmaker Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 (where she was to study again in 1961-1962, when her husband received a Canada Council grant to return to Paris for a writing project). She also studied with the Hungarian artist Arpad Szenes, with whom she shared studio space. She held her first solo exhibition in Paris, at the Galerie Lara Vincy, in 1957.

After returning to Canada, Tobie Steinhouse established herself as a painter and printmaker in Montreal. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts held solo exhibitions of her work in 1959 and 1963, and Steinhouse won its Jessie Dow Award in 1963. She became a member of the Canadian Group of Painters, serving as its last president, 1966-1968, and was a founding member of Richard Lacroix's Atelier libre des Recherches graphiques and la Guilde graphique in Montreal. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers, le Conseil de la Gravure du Québec and le Conseil québécois de l'Estampe. As well as exhibiting in these organizations' group shows, she exhibited her work in international print exhibitions in Europe, South America and the United States. She became interested in Japanese calligraphy in the 1990s, studying with the master calligrapher Hiroka Okata, and has exhibited award-winning calligraphy at international exhibitions in Tokyo.

The artworks of Tobie Steinhouse are held in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, le Musée des Beaux-Arts in Montreal and other institutions across Canada. In 1977, she published a portfolio of etchings in collaboration with the poet Miriam Waddington, titled Green World.
